the general election. his campaign is definitely not taking anything for granted. and th possibility of there being a write-in candidate. he is the democratic nomination for mayor. gray came into politics late. he's 67 years old. he won the council seat in 2004 and chair in 2006. now he's hoping to be the city's next mayor. the morning started in a quiet room as vincent gray and his family watched. then the final numbers came in. gray picked up 53% of the vote. and mayor adrian fenty, 46 he started his speech by acknowledging mayor adrian fenty. his supporters did the same. >> despite our differences i know well that adrian fenty shares our commitment to the city. please join me in applauding and thanking him for his record

announcement later on today. elaine reyes continues our coverage of the d.c.ayor race from fenty's headquarters. elaine, good morning. >> good morning. that's right. adrian fey expected to call sometime thimorning to concede. he said he wanted to wait until he got the official nbers from the board of election. some of the last people left just a few hours ago. he didn't stay up late waiting for the final votes tcome in. he was elected in 2006 as the district's youngest mayor. the votes came in yesterday, he took mostly white areas of the city while black voters were for gray. it's important to note only four years ago, in his last election, fenty won every precinct.

>> i always tell people you never know what's going to happen until thenight of the election. we expect to win. just wait for the board of election to do the count. >> now, what is next for mayor fenty. again, he was careful not to say too much tonight. he has said in the past he would not consider a write-in campaign. but a few hours ago his spokesman said it was too early to say if he would consider a write-in campaign. >> interesting. thank you very much. ee rain reyes reporting live. we know who is expected poised to take his place. kwame brown defeated orange and douglas in a landslide. brown walked away with 55 comred to orange's 30% and douglas's 6%.

defeated adrian fenty in the democratic primary. jim graham won his primary in ward 1 defeating smith d weaver in that race. > harry stomach as was victorious in ward 5. 62% of the votes. >> let's ta a look at ward 6. victory for tommy wells. defeated binson, getting 75 oers of the vote. we can now declare baker the winner in the race to replace retiring executive jack johnson with 97% of the votes counted. >> baker won the democratic primary with 44% in a five-way race. jackson is second with 33% of the vote, followed by samuel dean, levi and henry turner. >> repoer: baker, a form or state delegate said before the

numbers came in tuesday night that if he didn't win on his third try that he was done. well, despite the low voter turnout, baker doesn't have to worry about that anymore as he has won the prince gorge's county executive race. >> baker, baker, baker! >> the 51-year-old addressed the raucous crowd in six flag last night. this w a hotly contested five-way race at times was overshadowed by voter fraud and fake ballots around the county. jackson believed he was the most experienced person for the job, serving as sheriff for the past eight years. as of this morning he has not conceded defeat. he is excited to get to work and create jobs for the residents of prince george's county.

one of the two johns hopkins students hit b a suspected drunk driver last week has died. she was on 18th street and florda avenue when a car hit her before crashing into a restaurant. she died from her injuries last night. the 26-year-old was from austria. the driver, adams, was charged with aggravated assault and driving while intoxicated. the remains of a fallen

now, fenty stayed late waiting for final numbers to come in. elected back in 2006, he was the dirict's youngest mayor. and as the votes came in yesterday it appeared fenty took in mostly white areas of the city, while black voters supported vincent gray. constituents in the back complained of fenty's management style with 90% of the precinct this morning, gray had 53% of the vote, rather. fenty, 46%. >> take whatever decision the voters have and respond to it. we just need to know what that is the only way we can know is with the board of elections. >> now, again, a lot of people asked fenty late last night what would his future be in politics, if any. a lot of people were asking him what he was thinking. he saidn the past he would not consider a write-in campaign. when we talked to his spokesperson a few hours ago h saidt was auto early to say if a write-in campaign was a possibility. back to you. >> elainelaine, thank you.

good morning. welcome back. our top story appears that washington, d.c. will have a new mayor. vincent gray has defeated curren mayor adrian fenty in the democratic primary. gray won by 7 percentage points. elsewhere in the district, jim graham won his primary bid in ward 1 with 57% of the vote, defighting smith and weaver. council memberharry thomas was victorious in ward 5. he won easily over mcduffy, o hunter and turner with 62% of the vote. >> and in ward 6, victory for tommywells. he defeated robinson with 75% of the vote. now the race for prince george's coty executive. we can now declare baker the winner in the race to replace jack johnson with 97% of the votes kwounted. bakerwon the democratic primary with 44% in a five-way race. michael jackson was second. john is in the newsroom now with more on this race.
